🇵🇰 Defence Day of Pakistan – History, Significance & Commemorations
Defence Day (Urdu: یومِ دفاع; ALA-LC: Yaum-i Difāʿ; IPA: [jɔːm-e d̪ɪfɑː]) is observed annually in Pakistan on 6 September to honor the sacrifices made by the armed forces in defending the nation’s borders.
📅 Historical Background
The date marks 6 September 1965, when Indian forces crossed the international border near Lahore, launching an offensive during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. This was in response to Operation Grand Slam, Pakistan’s military operation aimed at capturing Jammu.
According to the official narrative, the Pakistan Army — despite being outnumbered and having fewer resources — successfully repelled the Indian assault, safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.
Writers in outlets such as Dawn and Al Jazeera argue that the story of an “unprovoked Indian attack” is an oversimplification and that both sides suffered heavy losses without significant territorial gains.
